HERSTORY

The Iota Nu Omega (INΩ) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® was chartered on November 11, 1972, in Syracuse, New York, within the Great Lakes Region.

The establishment of this Syracuse Graduate Chapter was inspired by the vision of a young Soror, Kathy Espy. Iota Nu Omega was formally established by 18 trailblazing Charter Members who immediately set out to uphold a legacy of prestige, notable character, and dedicated service to the community.

For over five decades, the chapter has maintained its commitment, operating under the motto "Service to all mankind."

Signature Programs and Community Impact

Iota Nu Omega is an active participant and catalyst for positive change in Central New York. Our programs align with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International Program Targets, focusing on sustainable change:

  • Educational Advancement: We have awarded over $21,000 in college scholarships and mentor young people through the ASCEND and #CAP programs in partnership with the Hillside Work-Scholarship program, impacting over 100 students in the Syracuse City School District. We also host the annual HBCU-Black College Career Day and the Kick-off to College Awareness Event.

  • Health and Wellness: Our chapter is deeply involved in raising awareness for critical health issues, including the Breast Cancer and Heart Health Walks. We have raised thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association through initiatives like the annual "Pink Goes Red" events. We also provide support for caregivers and patients battling breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

  • Economic Security & Civic Engagement: We host Economic Empowerment Fairs and financial workshops to help residents secure their legacy. We actively promote democratic participation through Voter Registration Drives.

  • Local and Global Outreach: We participate in Habitat for Humanity builds, organize Holiday Baskets for Families, and host an annual Ronald McDonald Day of Service. Globally, INΩ extends its reach by hand-stitching over 50 dresses for young girls in third-world countries and locally by collecting over 800 shoes, backpacks, and eyeglasses for residents in need.

Community Collaborations

Our commitment to service is strengthened by vital partnerships with leading organizations in Central New York. We proudly collaborate with:

  • Health & Wellness: American Heart Association, St. Joseph's Hospital, Onondaga County Office for Aging.

  • Education & Youth: Syracuse City School District, Girl Scout Troop, National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

  • Community & Civic Support: Dunbar Center, REACH CNY, League of Women Voters, Vera House, Habitat for Humanity, American Legion Dunbar Post 1645, WGCNY, and Wegmans.
